Mowing height, watering habits, fertilizer timing, insect pressure, and disease management all affect how well it performs. When those basics are handled properly, St. Augustine can be a dependable, good-looking lawn across North Texas.

Mowing St. Augustine Grass the Right Way

Mowing is one of the biggest factors in how your St. Augustine lawn looks and performs. Getting the height right is important, but it’s only part of the picture. How often you mow, how clean the cut is, and how you handle clippings all play a big role in keeping the lawn healthy.

Below, we’ll walk through proper mowing height, where thatch comes from, why sharp mower blades matter, and when it makes sense to bag clippings instead of mulching.

Recommended Mowing Height and Frequency for DFW Lawns

For most St. Augustine lawns in North Texas, we recommend mowing between 2 and 3 inches.

This height keeps the lawn looking clean and uniform while still protecting the soil and roots from heat. Letting St. Augustine grow too tall often leads to excess thatch, uneven growth, and maintenance issues later on.

In terms of frequency, most lawns can be mowed once per week. During peak growth periods — usually when it’s hot and wet — mowing a little more often can help keep growth under control and prevent clippings from piling up.

No matter the height or frequency, one rule always applies: never remove more than one-third of the blade at a time. Scalping stresses the grass, weakens the root system, and opens the door to weeds and disease.

Thatch Control (Why It Matters)

Thatch is the layer of dead grass, stems, and organic material that builds up right above the soil surface. A small amount is normal, but excessive thatch causes problems.

Maintenance Mode Watering (Healthy, Established Lawns)

Winter (Dormant Grass)
In winter, St. Augustine is dormant and not actively growing. Water lightly during dry stretches only. Heavy or frequent watering during dormancy does more harm than good.

Spring

When you’re trying to get St. Augustine to recover and fill back in, watering needs to be more consistent than in maintenance mode. The goal is to keep the soil moist (not saturated) so the grass can actively spread.

Water alone isn’t enough. Recovery mode works best when it’s paired with:

  • Heavier fertilization, mainly nitrogen
  • Warm weather, which drives growth
  • Consistent moisture, often daily or every other day

For example:

  • If a bag says it covers 10,000 sq ft, that’s for a healthy lawn in maintenance mode
  • If your lawn is thin or lacking color, that same bag may realistically cover 5,000–7,500 sq ft

In recovery mode, there usually isn’t a “perfect” recommended rate. Instead, we generally recommend applying 50–100% more fertilizer than the label rate to drive growth and help St. Augustine fill back in.

This works because you’re feeding the grass what it needs to recover — mainly nitrogen — and pairing it with warm weather and proper watering. Fertilizer, heat, and water together are what create thicker, healthier turf.

As long as you’re using a slow-release fertilizer, you don’t need to worry about burning your lawn. Slow-release nitrogen feeds gradually over time and makes over-application much more forgiving. Just avoid fast-release products when increasing rates.

Once the lawn thickens up and looks the way it should, you can scale back to standard maintenance rates.

Slow-release nitrogen has coatings of different thicknesses. As you water, those coatings dissolve gradually and feed the lawn over time instead of all at once.

How to Water After Fertilizing

Once fertilizer is applied, water matters just as much as the product itself.

Before you water, take a few minutes to blow fertilizer off hard surfaces like sidewalks, driveways, and patios. Most fertilizers contain iron, and once iron gets wet, it can permanently stain concrete. This is a small step that saves a lot of frustration later.

After that, water the lawn thoroughly to dissolve the fertilizer and move it down into the root system. Fertilizer has to be watered in to work — sitting dry on the surface does nothing.

For best results:

  • Water daily for the next 3–4 days after fertilizing
  • You’re not trying to flood the lawn — just enough to keep the soil moist and activate the fertilizer

This short period of consistent watering helps the fertilizer break down properly and gives the grass immediate access to nutrients. Once that window passes, you can return to your normal watering schedule.

Fertilizer Ratios Don’t Have to Be Exact (But They Do Matter)

Ratios are important — but they don’t have to match perfectly.

For example:

  • 24-0-11 and 28-0-3 are very similar and can be used interchangeably
  • 13-13-13 is not similar and is not a good choice for St. Augustine

It’s very common to see fertilizer ratios that are slightly different. Manufacturers do this on purpose — it creates confusion and makes people feel like they have to stick with one brand.

You don’t.

If you stay close to the recommended ratios, you’ll get the same results. Focus on similar nitrogen-heavy blends, not exact numbers.

If we get an unusually early warm-up, bump applications up slightly — pre-emergent has to be down before weeds sprout. Timing matters. Missing a pre-emergent window means fighting weeds later with stronger post-emergent herbicides, which are harder on your lawn and more difficult to manage.

Post-Emergent Herbicides (After Weeds Appear)

Post-emergent herbicides are used after weeds have already sprouted. These products kill actively growing weeds, but they do not prevent new weeds from coming up.

In St. Augustine lawns, post-emergent weed control depends heavily on the season, because the weeds you’re dealing with — and how aggressive they are — change throughout the year.

Post-Emergent Control for Cool-Season Weeds (Late Winter–Spring)

In late winter and early spring, most weed problems in St. Augustine come from cool-season weeds. This is the easiest time of year to control weeds, and it’s when many homeowners reach for weed & feed.

Weed & feed combines:

  • Fertilizer (to green up the lawn)
  • A herbicide (to kill existing weeds)

For St. Augustine, the most common active ingredient is atrazine, which works well on cool-season weeds like:

  • Clover
  • Henbit
  • Chickweed
  • Annual bluegrass

When weed & feed makes sense:

Summer weed control is a completely different situation.

As temperatures rise, warm-season grassy weeds take over. Common examples include:

  • Crabgrass
  • Dallisgrass
  • Goosegrass

These weeds are much harder to control because they are very similar in strength to St. Augustine. That means it’s easy to damage or kill your St. Augustine while trying to kill the weed.

Important things to understand about summer weed control:

  • Weed & feed does not work in summer
  • There is no single product that controls all summer weeds
  • Multiple herbicides may be needed depending on the target weed
  • Heat limits when you can safely spray

Herbicides used in summer are generally stronger, and application timing matters. Spraying during extreme heat can stress or injure St. Augustine — even when the product is labeled for it.

Because of this, summer weed control is more complicated and often best handled with professional guidance. Choosing the wrong product or rate can set your lawn back instead of improving it.

This is also why pre-emergent applications are so important — preventing summer weeds is far easier and safer than trying to eliminate them once they’re established.

One of the best things you can do when the first cool mornings arrive is to dial back watering. Reducing moisture is often the first and most effective step in stopping brown patch from spreading.

  • Preventative rates and curative rates are very different
  • Curative applications require higher rates
  • Always read and follow the product label

A common mistake is applying a preventative rate after brown patch is already active — this will not stop the disease.

These applications work because grubs are in their first or second instar stage, meaning they are very small and easy to control. Preventative products are effective at this stage and help stop grub problems before they ever show up in summer or fall.

It’s important to understand that preventative grub products will not work in summer once grubs are larger. That’s when stronger curative products like Dylox are needed instead.

Using the right product at the right time makes all the difference.

Surface Insects (Webworms, Chinch Bugs, and More)

Surface insects live and feed above the soil, damaging grass blades instead of roots. Common surface insects in St. Augustine lawns include:

  • Sod webworms
  • Chinch bugs
  • Armyworms

Surface insect damage often shows up as:

  • Chewed or thinning grass
  • Irregular brown patches
  • Damage that seems to spread quickly

Timing matters with surface insects. They are most active in the late evening, which is the best time to treat and make contact with the insects.

Preventative Insect Control (What We Recommend)

For surface insects, we commonly use products with the active ingredient bifenthrin, sold under popular brand names like Bifen IT.

Granular bifenthrin products work well as preventative treatments. We recommend starting preventative insecticide applications in May and continuing once per month through the active season.

Preventative treatments help control surface insects before they reach damaging levels and reduce the chances of dealing with major infestations later in the summer when heat stress is already high.

It’s important to understand that granular insecticides must be watered in before they begin working. This is fine for prevention, but it does delay control if insects are already active.

Treating Active Surface Insect Damage

When surface insects are already causing damage, liquid insecticides are the better choice.

Liquid bifenthrin products work immediately once applied, which is why they’re preferred for active infestations. Apply in the late evening, when insects are moving and feeding — this increases contact and effectiveness.

If you see surface insect damage:

  • Apply liquid insecticide in the late evening
  • Treat once per week for three weeks in a row

This part is critical.

Many surface insects — especially sod webworms — come from moths. The insecticide kills the webworms, but it does not kill the moths. Moths lay eggs, which hatch into new webworms.

Spraying once is not enough.

By treating weekly for three weeks, you break the life cycle. This is where most homeowners fall short — they spray once, see improvement, and then the problem comes right back.

Why Identifying the Insect Matters

Subsurface insects and surface insects require different insecticides.

We regularly see lawns where:

  • A surface insect product was applied
  • But the damage was actually from grubs

That treatment won’t touch them.

If you’re not sure which insect is causing the damage, the safest approach is to treat for both surface and subsurface insects. This ensures you’re not missing the real problem while damage continues.
