At The Grass Store DFW, grass isn’t just business — it’s an adventure.
It all started with a kid and a part-time job at a local sod lot. Curtis loved every bit of it — loading pieces of grass into customers’ cars, running forklifts, and jumping in wherever he could help. As a teenager, it felt like grown-up work — stacking pallets, loading trailers, and making things happen — and he couldn’t get enough. He’d tag along on trips to the farm just for the fun of it. The rumble of the trucks, the forklifts buzzing, the smell of fresh-cut grass — it was exciting. And the best part? The people. Customers who were genuinely happy to see you pull up. From that very first day, he knew this was what he wanted to do.
By 18, he had his CDL — and plenty of people to thank for helping him get there. Every minute he wasn’t in school, he was working around the grass business — learning, driving, and figuring things out one load at a time. After graduating from Texas A&M; — much to his mom’s dismay — he bought a truck and started hauling sod to other lots and businesses. Six months later, after a lot of long days and longer nights, he saved enough to buy an old forklift and decided to take a chance on selling sod himself. One small lot, a single forklift, and a hand-painted plywood sign — that’s how The Grass Store began.
Two years later came Curtis’s wife, Cherie. She left her job because he needed dependable help — and she turned out to be the best decision he ever made, not just in business but in life. Cherie has a gift for people. She cares — truly cares — about every customer, every order, and every detail. And when it comes to equipment, she’s one of the best around. A doctor once joked she could perform surgery with the skid steer she loads with — and he wasn’t far off. Customers bring her thank-you cards, homemade gifts, even cookies — little reminders that hard work and kindness still go a long way.
We’ve come a long way since that first forklift and plywood sign, but the drive hasn’t changed. Around here, we’re always working to stay ahead — fresher grass, better service, and dependable drivers who take pride in every delivery. We believe in crazy-good quality — the kind that makes people step back, smile, and say, “Now that’s what it’s supposed to look like.” Every variety we sell earns its place — we don’t move it unless it performs.
These days, zoysia has really stolen the show in North Texas — and for good reason. The new varieties just keep getting better: tougher in drought, softer underfoot, greener than ever, and with great shade tolerance too. It’s the kind of grass that makes you stop and look twice. We get excited about that — testing what’s new, picking the best, and leaving the rest. Built for Texas weather but with golf-course looks, zoysia has a way of turning everyday lawns into something special. Once people see it, they’re hooked. And while grasses keep evolving, our purpose never has.
The same passion that started with one kid and a part-time job still drives everything we do today. The Grass Store DFW runs on hard work, pride, and a love for what we do. We’ll keep building on what got us here — great grass, good people, and outworking the rest. And sure, competitors might not love seeing our trucks roll in, but our customers sure do.
Thanks for reading — stay green, DFW. — Curtis & Cherie
