But Bermuda has a simple rule: the sharper you want it to look, the more mowing it takes. A Bermuda lawn can look “good” with basic mowing. But if you’re chasing that tight, clean “fairway” look in the front yard (and it does look awesome), you need to understand the mowing height, mower type, and mowing schedule that come with it.
Correct Mowing Heights for Bermuda in DFW
There are two realistic mowing ranges for Bermuda lawns in the Dallas–Fort Worth area:
1–2 Inches (Reel Mower Range)
Keeping Bermuda between 1 and 2 inches produces the tight, clean look most people associate with high-end Bermuda lawns. At this height, a reel mower is required to get a proper cut.

2–3 Inches (Rotary Mower Range)
Keeping Bermuda between 2 and 3 inches is the most common setup for residential lawns in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. This height works well with a standard rotary mower, which is the equipment most homeowners and lawn crews already use.
A rotary mower cuts with a single blade that spins underneath the deck. At 2–3 inches, Bermuda has enough leaf length for the mower to cut evenly and consistently, producing a dense, uniform lawn without tearing the grass. This height range also gives the mower enough room to do its job cleanly across the entire yard.
Bermuda maintained at 2–3 inches still looks sharp, but maintenance is more manageable. Most lawns at this height can be mowed once per week, increasing frequency during peak summer growth if a tighter finish is desired.
Both mowing ranges are correct. The difference comes down to the look you want and the level of maintenance you’re willing to commit to.
Sharp Blades Are Critical for Bermuda
Regardless of mower type, sharp blades are non-negotiable with Bermuda.
Because Bermuda blades are narrow, dull blades tear instead of cut. That tearing shows up quickly as brown or frayed tips and a stressed appearance across the lawn. If Bermuda looks rough shortly after mowing, blade sharpness is one of the first things to address.
Keeping blades sharp improves appearance immediately and reduces stress on the grass.
Don’t Remove Too Much at One Time (The One-Third Rule)
Bermuda doesn’t respond well when too much grass is taken off in a single mowing. When that happens, you’re cutting past the green leaf and down into the stem.
The lawn will recover — Bermuda is resilient — but doing this repeatedly adds stress, slows how quickly the grass spreads, and keeps the lawn from reaching full density.
That’s why the one-third rule matters: never remove more than one-third of the blade height in one cut. If you’re consistently cutting the green off when you mow, the fix is simple — increase mowing frequency. During the hottest parts of the year, mowing more often keeps Bermuda dense, healthy, and looking the way people expect Bermuda to look.
Thatch: What It Is and When It Becomes a Problem

When thatch gets too thick, it acts like a sponge and a barrier at the same time. Water, nutrients, and oxygen get held in that layer instead of moving down into the soil. As a result, roots stay shallow and don’t develop the strength they should. Trapped moisture also creates ideal conditions for fungal disease.
Mulching vs Bagging Bermuda Clippings
Mulching and bagging are how you manage thatch before it becomes a soil-level problem.
Mulching means using a mulching kit on your mower. A mulching kit keeps clippings under the mower deck longer and chops them into much smaller pieces than a standard cut. Those smaller pieces break down faster and return nutrients to the soil instead of piling up on the soil surface.
Because Bermuda clippings are already small, mulching works well most of the time — as long as clippings disappear after mowing.
If you mow and clippings:
- stay visible on top of the lawn, or
- don’t break down after you pass over them again
that’s a sign material is building faster than it can decompose. In that case, bagging for a few mowings helps remove excess clippings before they settle into the turf and contribute to thatch buildup.
Once growth slows and clippings break down normally again, you can switch right back to mulching.
How Aeration Helps When Thatch Builds Up
When thatch reaches the point where it’s interfering with water movement and root health, aeration becomes an important next step.
Core aeration works by pulling small plugs of soil out of the ground. Those openings allow water, nutrients, and oxygen to move through the thatch layer and into the soil, where the roots actually need them. Aeration also increases microbial activity in the soil, which helps break down excess organic material — including thatch — over time.
For Bermuda lawns in the Dallas–Fort Worth area, aeration is best done during active growth, when the grass can recover quickly and take full advantage of improved soil conditions.
Watering Bermuda Grass in Dallas–Fort Worth
Bermuda grass is one of the most drought-tolerant turfgrasses used in the Dallas–Fort Worth area, but “drought tolerant” doesn’t mean “doesn’t need water.” Whether you’re trying to get through a hot Texas summer with watering restrictions or you’re trying to help thinning or damaged areas recover, how you water matters as much as how much you water.
Too many homeowners water too often and in small amounts — and that trains Bermuda to keep its roots near the surface. When conditions get hot or dry, a shallow root system means the lawn starts to stress and turn brown quickly, even though Bermuda can handle heat when its roots are deep and healthy.
To keep things simple, it helps to think about watering in three situations:
- Maintenance mode (healthy, established lawns)
- Recovery mode (filling in damaged or thin areas)
- New sod installation
Maintenance Mode Watering (Healthy, Established Bermuda)

Deep and Infrequent Is Better

Best Time to Water
Early morning — between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. — is ideal. This allows water to soak into the soil before daytime heat increases evaporation.
Seasonal Adjustments
Winter (Dormant Grass)
Bermuda is dormant in winter and not actively growing. Water only during extended dry periods. Overwatering during dormancy does more harm than good.
Spring

Even with a watering schedule, the lawn itself is the best indicator.
Common signs Bermuda is starting to dry out include:
- Grass blades taking on a dull or slightly grayish color
- Footprints staying visible after walking across the lawn
- Turf that doesn’t spring back when pressed
When you see these signs, it’s time to water. Catching moisture stress early helps Bermuda recover quickly without unnecessary stress.
Recovery Mode (When Bermuda Needs to Fill In)
Maintenance watering focuses on keeping a lawn alive and strong. Recovery mode applies when you’re deliberately trying to help thin, damaged, or worn areas fill back in.
When Bermuda is damaged and needs to spread into bare spots, it needs:
- Consistent moisture that keeps soil evenly damp
- Warm soil temperatures
- Nutrients (especially nitrogen) to push new growth
In recovery mode, watering may be more frequent — sometimes daily or every other day — but only enough to keep the root zone moist, not soggy. Once the lawn fills in and looks dense again, switch back to maintenance watering so roots continue to grow deep.
New Bermuda Sod Watering
New Bermuda sod has no established roots, so watering during installation is very different from watering an established lawn.
The first watering should be heavy. This initial soak pushes water through the sod and into the soil underneath, eliminates air pockets, and ensures full contact between the sod and the ground.
After that first deep watering, shift to frequent, light watering. The goal is to keep the sod and the soil surface consistently moist while roots begin growing down into the soil. This often means watering multiple times per day for short durations, especially during hot or windy weather.

Aeration is one of the most beneficial — and most commonly skipped — practices for Bermuda lawns in North Texas. Even though Bermuda is aggressive and resilient, it still has to deal with the same heavy clay soils that dominate the Dallas–Fort Worth area.

- If you can push a shovel into the soil easily, compaction probably isn’t a big issue.
- If the ground feels tight, hard, and difficult to penetrate, that’s clay — and aeration becomes a major advantage.

For Bermuda lawns in the Dallas–Fort Worth area, we’ve found that around 1.5 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet is often a better fit. That additional nitrogen gives Bermuda what it needs to maintain strong color, density, and aggressive lateral growth.
If Bermuda is thin or trying to fill in bare areas, even higher rates may be used temporarily to drive recovery.
The important thing to understand is this:
Recommended rates are general guidelines. What you apply should be based on your grass type and what your lawn needs — not just what the bag says it covers.
Maintenance vs Recovery Fertilization
Maintenance Mode
Maintenance mode applies when your Bermuda lawn is already thick, healthy, and established.
In maintenance mode:
- Nitrogen rates typically fall in the 1.0–1.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft range
- Applications are spaced throughout the growing season
- The goal is steady color, density, and controlled growth
This keeps the lawn looking sharp without pushing excessive top growth.
Recovery Mode (Filling In Thin or Bare Areas)
Recovery mode applies when Bermuda needs to spread and fill back in.
In recovery mode:
- Nitrogen rates are increased
- Applications may be closer together
- Growth is intentionally pushed
This works because Bermuda thrives on heat, nitrogen, and water. When all three are present, Bermuda spreads quickly and regains density.
Recovery mode is temporary. Once the lawn fills in and looks the way it should, fertilizer rates should be reduced back to maintenance levels to avoid unnecessary mowing and stress.
Use Slow-Release Fertilizer (Very Important)
Slow-release nitrogen is especially important for Bermuda, particularly when higher nitrogen rates are being used.
Slow-release fertilizers feed gradually as their coatings break down with water. This provides steady nutrition instead of delivering all the nitrogen at once.
Benefits of slow-release fertilizer:
- More even growth
- Better color consistency
- Much lower burn risk
- More forgiving at higher application rates
Fast-release nitrogen can green quickly, but it also increases burn and stress risk — especially during summer heat. Fast-release products should be avoided when pushing Bermuda growth.

Important Note on Weed & Feed for Bermuda
Bermuda weed & feed products use a different herbicide chemistry than St. Augustine.
Most Bermuda weed & feed products rely on 2,4-D–based herbicides, which are safe for Bermuda when applied according to the label. Always read the product label and confirm it is specifically labeled for Bermuda grass before applying.
Never assume a weed & feed product is safe across all grass types.
How to Water After Fertilizing
Fertilizer must be watered in to work.
Before watering:
- Blow fertilizer off sidewalks, driveways, and patios
- Most fertilizers contain iron, which can permanently stain concrete once wet
After application:
- Water thoroughly to move fertilizer into the soil
- For the next 3–4 days, water daily just enough to keep the soil moist
This short period of consistent moisture activates the fertilizer and allows Bermuda to access nutrients quickly. After that, return to your normal watering schedule.
Fertilizer Ratios Matter — But Exact Numbers Aren’t Critical
What matters most with Bermuda is using a nitrogen-heavy fertilizer. Nitrogen is the main nutrient that drives color, growth, and recovery.
For example:
- 24-0-11 and 28-0-3 are very similar and can be used interchangeably
- 13-13-13 is not similar and is not a good choice for Bermuda
You’ll notice fertilizer ratios are often slightly different from one brand to the next. Those differences aren’t because the grass needs something different — they’re largely a marketing choice, designed to keep products from looking identical and to encourage brand loyalty.
As long as you stay within the same general nitrogen range and use a slow-release fertilizer, Bermuda will respond the same way regardless of the brand name on the bag.
Weed Control for Bermuda Lawns in Dallas–Fort Worth
The cleanest Bermuda lawns aren’t weed-free by accident. The most effective weed control isn’t killing weeds after you see them — it’s preventing them from ever coming up in the first place.
This matters even more with Bermuda because Bermuda does not choke out weeds the way some other grasses do. It spreads aggressively when conditions are right, but it still leaves plenty of opportunity for weeds if prevention is ignored.
That’s why a good Bermuda weed-control plan always starts with pre-emergent.
Pre-Emergent Herbicides (Especially Important for Bermuda)
Pre-emergent herbicides work before weeds sprout. They don’t kill existing weeds — they stop weed seeds in the soil from germinating.
For Bermuda lawns, pre-emergent is one of the most important tools you have. It dramatically reduces the number of weeds you’ll have to fight later with stronger post-emergent products.
Think of pre-emergent as insurance. You’re treating for the weeds that are coming next — not the ones you see today.
One of the most commonly used and proven pre-emergents is Barricade. It’s available in both liquid and granular form:
- Liquid applications are often more cost-effective for larger lawns
- Granular products work well for smaller yards and are easy to apply with a spreader
DFW Pre-Emergent Schedule for Bermuda
- February 1
- May 1
- August 1
- November 1
Timing matters. Pre-emergent must be down before weeds sprout. If we get an early warm-up, applications may need to be bumped earlier. Missing a pre-emergent window usually means fighting weeds later with stronger products.
Post-Emergent Herbicides (After Weeds Appear)
Post-emergent herbicides are used after weeds are already growing. These products kill existing weeds but do nothing to prevent new ones from coming up.
Post-emergent weed control in Bermuda depends heavily on the season.
Spring Weed Control (Cool-Season Weeds)
In late winter and spring, most weed problems in Bermuda lawns come from cool-season broadleaf weeds. This is the easiest time of year to clean things up.
For Bermuda, weed & feed products typically use 2,4-D–based herbicides. These work well on many spring weeds, but it’s critical to read the label and confirm the product is labeled for Bermuda grass.
When weed & feed makes sense:
- Weeds are widespread
- Large areas of the lawn are affected
- You want a single application for fertilizer and weed control
When weed & feed does not make sense:
- Weeds are light or scattered
- Most of the lawn is already clean
If weed pressure is light, a better option is:
- Apply regular fertilizer
- Spot-spray weeds with a liquid 2,4-D product
This limits stress on the lawn while still controlling problem areas.
Summer Weed Control (Warm-Season Weeds)
Summer weed control is a different animal.
As temperatures rise, warm-season grassy weeds become the main problem. Common examples include:
- Crabgrass
- Dallisgrass
- Goosegrass
The upside with Bermuda is that it can tolerate stronger herbicides than more sensitive grasses. The downside is that summer weed control is more complex and mistakes are easier to make.
Important things to understand about summer weed control in Bermuda:
- Weed & feed does not work in summer
- There is no single product that controls every summer weed
- Different weeds require different herbicides
- Heat limits when and how products can be applied
Even though Bermuda is tougher, it’s still critical to make sure any herbicide you use is labeled for Bermuda grass. Application timing, rates, and temperature all matter.
Because of this, summer weed control is often best handled with professional guidance. Choosing the wrong product or spraying at the wrong time can set the lawn back instead of improving it.
This is also why pre-emergent applications are so important — preventing summer weeds is far easier than trying to kill them once they’re established.
Bottom Line on Weed Control for Bermuda
If you want a clean Bermuda lawn, prevention is everything.
Use pre-emergent consistently, be selective with post-emergent products, and understand that summer weed control takes more care than spring cleanup. When the plan is right, Bermuda responds well — but skipping prevention almost always leads to more work later.
Common Bermuda Grass Diseases in Dallas–Fort Worth
Bermuda is one of the most disease-resistant grasses used in North Texas, but it isn’t immune. When problems do show up, they’re usually tied to timing, moisture, or fertility — not weakness in the grass itself.
In the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, spring dead spot is the most significant disease Bermuda homeowners encounter. It doesn’t show up often, but when it does, it gets attention.
Understanding when it develops — and when it needs to be treated — makes it much easier to manage.
Spring Dead Spot (The Most Common Bermuda Disease)
Spring dead spot is the most serious disease that affects Bermuda in North Texas. Unlike many turf diseases, the damage doesn’t appear right away — it shows up months after the infection actually occurs.
What it looks like:
- Circular or irregular dead patches that don’t green up in spring
- Areas often look completely dormant while surrounding turf wakes up normally
When it appears:
- Early spring, as Bermuda breaks dormancy
What causes it:
- A fungal infection that develops in the fall
- Excess nitrogen late in the growing season
- Compacted or poorly drained soil
This is the key point most people miss:
Spring dead spot is prevented in the fall — not fixed in the spring.
Once you see the damage, the fungus has already done its work.
Preventing and Managing Spring Dead Spot
Spring dead spot is best handled preventatively, not reactively.
If your lawn has a history of spring dead spot, fungicide applications should be made in the fall, when soil temperatures are cooling but Bermuda is still active. Treating at this time targets the fungus before winter dormancy.
A fungicide commonly used for spring dead spot prevention and suppression is Heritage G. It provides both preventative and curative activity and moves systemically through the plant when watered in lightly. Applications are typically spaced about 28 days apart and should be rotated with other fungicide groups to avoid resistance.
Important things to understand:
- Preventative and curative rates are very different
- Spring applications will not repair existing damage
- Fall timing is critical for control
- Always follow the product label
Cultural practices matter too. Avoid heavy nitrogen late in the season, improve drainage where possible, and consider aeration to reduce compaction — all of these help lower risk.
Other Bermuda Diseases (Much Less Common)
Most other diseases seen in Bermuda lawns are minor and situational, and they’re far less common than spring dead spot.
Dollar Spot
- Appears as small straw-colored spots
- Usually linked to low nitrogen levels
- Often clears up once fertility is corrected
Leaf Spot / Melting Out
- Rare in well-managed Bermuda
- Typically tied to excess moisture and stress
- Often resolves when watering and mowing practices improve
Take-All Root Rot
- Uncommon in Bermuda but possible in poorly drained areas
- Causes slow decline and poor response to fertilizer
- Often linked to wet soils and high pH
These issues are usually the result of environmental stress rather than disease pressure. Correcting watering, fertility, and soil conditions often resolves the problem without fungicide.
Insect Control for Bermuda Lawns in Dallas–Fort Worth
